WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS (WiFi) AT HKU
If you are bringing a laptop and want to access wireless at the conference site, please send the MAC address ID of your laptop to Wilson Chau at wklchau@hku.hk.
The MAC address is a unique identifier on your computer’s WiFi card. HKU’s system requires the MAC address to control access to WiFi. How to get the MAC address:
Windows XP and Windows 7
- Click Windows Start; then choose Run; type in the letters cmd; then click OK
- Once a black command window appears, type in ipconfig/all and hit the Enter key.
- Look under the Ethernet Adapter – Wireless Network Connection section. The Physical Address is its MAC address.
- The brand name is shown in the “Description” field (above the “Physical Address” field)

Macintosh OS X Leopard (10.5)
- Select System Preferences from the Dock or under the Apple menu.
- Select Network Pane.

ATTIRE
Business casual attire will be suitable (button down shirt, slacks, no tie necessary) for men and the equivalent for women. You may wish to have a light sweater or shawl on hand to use as the meeting rooms will be air-conditioned and may be a bit cool. You may also wish to bring a sport coat and tie to wear at the receptions and dinner.

The unit of currency is the Hong Kong dollar ($HK), which is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a rate of US$1 to $HK7.80. If you’d like to see current conversion rates, please click here.
Major banks are open from 9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday, and 9 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday. Banks, money-changers, and hotels charge a fee for providing exchange services. All major credit cards are accepted and ATMs are widely distributed. Some HSBC ‘Electronic Money’ machines provide 24-hour cash withdrawal facilities for Visa and MasterCard holders.

The official languages in Hong Kong are English and Cantonese. Many people also speak Mandarin.

A valid passport with at least 6 months validity is required for all persons traveling to Hong Kong. Please check with your travel agent to see if you require a visa to enter. You may want to make a copy of your passport in case you lose it. If your passport is lost or stolen, you should contact your consulate or embassy.
HEALTH
If you have not done so already, please check with your physician for health advice before traveling to Hong Kong. There are no specific health risks associated with travel to Hong Kong. Food and water are safe, although some travel websites do advise visitors to consider only drinking bottled water for the first few days of their stay.
ELECTRICITY
The standard voltage is 220 volts, 50 hertz alternating current. Most outlets are designed to accommodate the British three square pins. You might consider purchasing an adapter before you leave home, but you may pick one up at a shop in the Hong Kong airport terminal or around the city.
COMMUNICATIONS
The international access code for Hong Kong is 852. All local calls in Hong Kong are free except at public pay phones, where they cost $HK1.00 for every 5 minutes. International direct-dial (IDD) calls can be made from public phones with a phone card or from hotels. Phone cards are sold at convenience stores around the city (7-Elevens and Circle Ks). To make international calls, dial 001 and then the country code.
